The project extended some activities undertaken as part of the
previous Fireplan project (see Fireplan), specifically:
- the ongoing development of savanna burning greenhouse emission
abatement projects across northern Australia, in conjunction with
NAILSMA and other partners.
- completion of the book, Wurrk: Managing fire regimes in
north Australian savannas—ecology, culture, economy.
- continuation of the project funded principally through LWA:
Fire management in northern Australia: Integrating ecological,
economic and social outcomes.
Project objectives
The main objective of the project was to continue to develop
savanna burning greenhouse emission abatement projects across
northern Australia, particularly in association with a project
funded through the Commonwealth, and to be coordinated through
North Australian Indigenous Land and Sea Management Alliance. The
project is Savanna Burning, Greenhouse Gas Emissions Abatement,
and Indigenous Economic Development Opportunities for Remote
Communities across Northern Australia.
While a key focus of the project is to further Indigenous
economic development opportunities associated with savanna burning,
a broader objective concerns the development of regional fire
management partnerships involving the development of regional
multi-tenure commercial partnerships.
This long-term strategic project objective is to develop
structural change in savanna fire and landscape management in order
to build a sound regional economy.
