Technical Guideline for Tropical Rapid Appraisal of Riparian Condition

Land and Water Australia 2006

LWA-TRARC

This Technical Guideline is a field manual for rapidly assessing the condition of tropical riverbanks (riparian areas) based on work carried out by the Tropical Savannas CRC. It includes a background to the Tropical Savannas CRC project; information on riparian health; a step by step guide to using the Tropical Rapid Appraisal of Riparian Condition (TRARC); and some examples of its application.

You can download the Technical Guideline below.

LWA TRARC Technical Guideline 2006

Land and Water Australia Technical Guideline for Tropical Rapid Appraisal of Riparian Condition - Version 1

Tropical Rapid Appraisal of Riparian Condition (TRARC) is a user-friendly scheme for assessing the health of river-side environments where there is a distinct zone of river-side vegetation (riparian zone).

It uses four groups of indicators for condition: (1) Plant cover; (2) Native plant regeneration; (3) Weeds; and (4) Erosion. The schemes also assesses the range of pressures on riparian condition.

TRARC has been tested by landholders across the Tropical Savannas region, and is being continually perfected as new information and user feedback is received.

This booklet describes the role of river-side vegetation and how to carry out an assessment. A score sheet is provided.
