PhD Scholarships in Environmental Science and Mining Rehabilitation

Griffith University, Qld

Applications close: 30 October 2009.

Applications are being sought for 1 full PhD scholarship at APAI rate ($ 26,669 p.a.) and one top-up scholarship ($ 7,000 p.a.) at Griffith University to work on an industry-oriented ARC Linkage Project – Ecosystem restoration of bauxite-processing residue disposal areas – in close collaboration with Alcoa Australia Ltd and Lincoln University.

Australia is one of the world’s largest alumina producers, but sustainable rehabilitation of bauxite-processing residue storage areas (RSAs) is problematic due to the inherently hostile characteristics of residue materials. This project will investigate important biogeochemical cycling processes of nitrogen, phosphorus and carbon and develop appropriate fertilisation strategies for successful ecosystem restoration of RSAs.

These scholarships are open to Australian citizens and overseas applicants with an Honours degree (1 or 2A) or equivalent in the fields of agriculture, environmental chemistry, soil biochemistry or plant biology.
