Dugong and Marine Turtle: Teaching Resource and Information Package

This 64 page resource provides teachers and educators with a wealth of information about dugong and marine turtle and frames scientific ecological knowledge in a Torres Strait context.

Written and compiled by the Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA) Land and Sea Management unit in consultation with Traditional Owners from the region, the package includes links to the community-based turtle and dugong management programs run by Indigenous land and sea managers in the Torres Strait and northern Australia.

Dugong and marine turtle activities in the package link to Education Queensland’s ‘The New Basics Project’—specifically the ‘Rich Task’ component. Torres Strait languages (Eastern Island Language and Western Island Language) feature throughout the package and renowned Torres Strait artist Alick Tipoti provided cover artwork Ai Pagaik and Waru Thurul.

An accompanying CDROM adds richness to the package by providing teachers and educators with multimedia content, additional student activities and worksheets, booklets and posters. Project material from the North Australian Indigenous Land and Sea Management Alliance (NAILSMA) Dugong and Marine Turtle Project is also provided, including TSRA’s Land and Sea Management Unit’s project newsletters, NAILSMA’s Dugong and Marine Turtle Knowledge Handbook, and video stories from Indigenous Land and Sea Managers contained on Message Disk 3 DVD.

Teachers and educators outside of the Torres Strait will also find this package very useful as a tool not only for inspiring learning about dugong and marine turtle but the culture of Torres Strait Islanders as well.

This project is supported by the NAILSMA Dugong and Marine Turtle Project, through funding from the Australian Government’s Caring for our Country.
