Tristan Simpson

Project Coordinator – Indigenous Livelihoods

Personal

Tristan was born and raised in Wollongong, New South Wales. After graduating from the University of Sydney with a BSc in Marine Science he set off travelling, since then he has not stopped. Tristan has strived to incorporate his work with his hobbies, travelling and diving. By taking this approach Tristan has ventured and explored through the U.K., Europe, Africa, Central America, South East Asia, the Pacific Islands and around Australia.

Professional

While living and travelling through the U.K., Europe and Northern Africa Tristan sought out a warmer climate and went through Central America where he was fortunate to work on several conservation and natural resource management projects along the Costa Maya in the Caribbean. Following this period overseas Tristan moved to Exmouth, W.A. to work for the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) as a Nature Conservation Officer operating predominantly on Marine Turtle and Whale Shark management projects on the Ningaloo Reef. Tristan then moved on to initiate his own natural resource management focused company that operated in Fiji; working directly with remote Fijian communities with the aid of experienced project partners to sustainably manage their natural resources through community driven initiatives. Tristan instigated, developed and managed many different projects for the Fijian communities and project partners he worked with during this period.

Project

Tristan joined NAILSMA in July, 2011 as the Project Coordinator – Indigenous Livelihoods. This role involves the coordination of the Northern Australia Water Futures Assessment projects and the Tropical Rivers and Coastal Knowledge (TRaCK) Synthesis of the NAILSMA coordinated Theme 6 case studies and the production of the Indigenous Community Water Planning Guide. These projects aim to develop sustainable Indigenous livelihoods across north Australia that are based on cultural and natural resource management.
